From 14 to 15 September 2012, Biograd na Moru hosted the 59th World Ploughing Contest, which gathered 61 competitors from 31 countries. The contest was organised by the World Ploughing Organization (WPO), the Ministry of Agriculture, the Croatian Ploughing Contest Organising Association and the City of Biograd na Moru. The event was a significant moment for Croatian agriculture and the promotion of ploughing skills. The ploughmen demonstrated their abilities on farmland belonging to Vrana d. o. o. The event brought great recognition to Croatian agriculture and showed that even small countries can successfully host events of world stature. The World Ploughing Contest, both globally and nationally, is not only a test of skill and precision, but also a symbol of dedication, knowledge and respect for the land and the work that comes from it. The World Ploughing Contest is one of the oldest and most important agricultural competitions in the world, with the aim of improving ploughing skills, promoting agricultural technologies, and strengthening international cooperation among farmers. The first World Ploughing Championship was held in 1953 in Canada, and has since been held every year in a different member country of the World Ploughing Organization (WPO). The competition brings together the best ploughmen from several dozen countries, competing in two categories: conventional ploughing and reversible ploughing. Beyond technical precision, competitors are also judged on aesthetic criteria such as the straightness of the furrows, the regularity of the turns and the overall appearance of the ploughed field. Croatia has a rich ploughing tradition and has been an equal member of the World Ploughing Organization since 1999. Croatian ploughmen regularly take part in world championships, and their knowledge and skill are also recognised internationally. Croatia hosts an annual National Ploughing Championship organised by the Croatian Ploughing Association with the support of the Ministry of Agriculture. Winners of that competition earn the right to represent Croatia at the world event. Particular attention is paid to young ploughmen and education in modern farming practices, ensuring the transfer of tradition and technique to new generations.
