Monument to Fallen Fighters of the People's Liberation War

detail.about

The Monument to the Fallen Fighters of the People's Liberation War and Victims of Fascism was erected in 1953 by the residents of Biograd na Moru and the Federation of Biograd Veterans of the People's Liberation War, as a token of gratitude and remembrance for fellow townspeople who fell in the anti-fascist struggle. The monument was designed by PAVAO PERIĆ, a sculptor born in Ercegovci near Dicmo in 1907 and died in Zagreb in 1978. In addition to this memorial in Biograd, he created monuments in Vrapče and Udbina. On a stone pedestal about 1.5 m tall, at the top stands a bronze sculpture: "A wounded man with a rifle in the arms of a woman," almost life-size. Four concrete steps lead up to the pedestal. A marble plaque is mounted on each side of the pedestal, each inscribed with a memorial text. The monument does not contain individual names of the fallen of the People's Liberation War, only the aggregate figure of 146 fallen citizens of Biograd and victims of fascist terror. Every ninth resident of Biograd gave his life for the freedom of his homeland — also recorded on the monument. The Monument to Fallen Fighters of the People's Liberation War in Biograd na Moru is one of the important memorial sites from the post-WWII period, dedicated to the fighters who took part in the anti-fascist struggle. Historical and social significance This monument symbolises the sacrifice of local inhabitants who took part in the fight against fascism during the Second World War. Like many similar monuments across Croatia, it was erected during the period of socialist Yugoslavia to emphasise the importance of the anti-fascist movement and the joint struggle of the peoples. Wreaths are traditionally laid and candles lit on the monument in tribute to the fallen. Such commemorations are organised by local authorities and anti-fascist veterans' associations, preserving historical memory and passing it on to younger generations. Today's role Today the monument primarily has a memorial and educational role. It is a reminder of the importance of the fight for freedom and of the sacrifices made in laying the foundations of modern society. It is also part of the cultural and historical heritage of the City of Biograd na Moru.
