detail.about
The remains of the Church of St. John the Evangelist belong to the former Benedictine basilica built in the 11th century by the Croatian king Petar Krešimir IV. The monastery witnessed a turbulent history, but its life was short because the Venetians demolished it almost to the ground during the conquest of Biograd. Although the Benedictines had to leave the monastery, they did not disappear – under the leadership of their abbot, they moved to Šibenik, and after four years, they permanently settled on the island of Pašman, where they had the church of Sts. Cosmas and Damian on Čokovac hill. Today, the remains of the Church of St. John the Evangelist speak of the importance of this monastery and its connection to Croatian medieval history.
